He has had a long career in the medical sciences, ranging from virology, epidemiological field studies, vaccines, antivirals and vector control programs. He is also co-director of a Colombia-Wisconsin One Health Consortium, a joint effort between the University of Wisconsin and many institutions in Colombia.
He specialized in the research and development of vaccines against dengue, chikungunya, influenza, rabies, plague and many other emerging infectious diseases. He has more than 30 years of research experience and more than 150 scientific publications in international journals.
