Dr. Vega, a distinguished Medical Doctor and Specialist in Gerontology and Geriatrics, brings decades of expertise to the field. Originally from Cuba, Dr. Vega earned his credentials from the Medical University of Havana. Additionally, he furthered his research pursuits as a Research Fellow in Geriatrics at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
From 1991 to 2005, Dr. Vega served as the Deputy Director of the Center of Research on Aging and Health in Havana, Cuba. During this tenure, he also held the pivotal role of National Director for Older Persons Care for the Ministry of Health and chaired Health and Aging at the National School of Public Health in Cuba from 1998 to 2005.
He served as Secretary General of the Latin American Committee of the International Association of Gerontology (COMLAT-IAG) from 1999 to 2003. During this period, he pursued further academic endeavors, earning his Master of Public Health and Aging in Havana, Cuba, from 2000 to 2005. Dr. Vega was also the founder and member of the Executive Committee of the Latin American Academy of Medicine of the Older Adult (ALMA).
Dr. Vega was part of the international core group that constructed and produced the draft of the United Nations’ Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, adopted by the Second World Assembly on Ageing in Madrid in 2002 and in 2006. He was then appointed as the Regional Advisor on Aging and Health at PAHO/WHO until 2015. In 2015, he was promoted to his current position as PAHO/WHO Unit Chief for the Life Course Unit.
In his career, he has authored and co-authored more than 50 publications in national and international journals books and other publications. Dr. Vega has continued to be active in academia and has been a Professor of Gerontology and Geriatrics at the Medical University of Havana since 1992. In 2019, he was appointed as Associate Professor at the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work in Florida International University
